(The idea came up when I tried to search creepypasta about The Elder Scrolls series that is not-so-crappy. Since there were not many good creepypastas about TES games, and a few I read were too bizzare to be convinced. I thought ‘what if I can mix known bugs, glitches, and mod problems into some creepy story?’, then wrote down a piece on TESAdventures.com forum. Some other users posted ‘the next part’ on that thread, and it could be made to be some story if we could write more. Unfortunately, I cannot access TESAdventures recently, so the final(complete) story may not be the same as the pieces on that thread. Anyway, thanks to Ginnyfizz, aongra, and other people of TESAdventures)
Here goes the story(maybe not-so-good):
—————————————–
Years ago(about 2007), since I saw some screenshots of TES4: Oblivion(though some of them are adult-oriented), and got that game and expansion pack, Shivering Isles, I became the avid player. I made new characters(and I still have save files of most of them), played the game, downloaded and installed various mods I came across, and so on.
But as time goes on, like usual, I was slowly losing interest about the game. Not surprising; I am always like that. Having a new toy, playing with it for a while, then toss it away, but not so far. My interests are never completely dead; They are always coming and going. So I continue to visit official forum and community sites, and download mods.
One day, I decided to play it for a while. I updated some mods I installed already, then launched the game. The game ran as usual. The same splash, the same title(I never installed any title replacer). I started new game, then I found my character was near Leyawiin, not usual Imperial Prison. Because I finished main quest several times, I activated some ‘Alternative Start Mod’ that disables main quest completely(and I have some more save files with that mod). I finished to make my character, then head to Leyawiin gate. That moment, I felt something was off.
The sound was missing. There was no music, no ambient sound, no talking voices. I checked audio option, and realized I turned the master volume down, to 0. I remembered I had have to turn off the sound because of my good ol’ soundcard, it never worked right since I added RAM to my computer(SB Live! has problem with 4GB or larger RAM). I was unemployed, and did not have enough money to buy new soundcard. To make that old soundcard work, I had to install tweaked driver, and it worked well before. I saved and quitted the game, and played some music I like. The music played well. Then I played some movie files. Although there was sound problem, they played well when I switched movie player. So it’s not soundcard problem.
I ran the game again, and entered the city. Although I turned the volume up, still there was no sound. I exited the game again and checked Oblivion.ini. All sound options were ‘turned on’.
‘Cr@p………’ I cursed under my breath. The game was still silent, I needed to turn on general subtitles. As walking down the street, I noticed more things were wrong. The NPCs were doing their usual schedule, but other than generic greeting, they didn’t talk to each other. No rumors about other provinces, no usual silly mudcrabs. I tried talking to an Argonian beggar. He did his greeting line as always, but his lips were not moving. And after the greeting line, there was only one dialogue option: Rumor. No giving gold or something. I chose rumor topic, but he did not say anything. I ended the conversation, save the game, and quit to desktop.
I checked the installed mods, but there was no mod to do that. I could not find anything interfering with dialogues. Checking mods, finding the problem, and solving it was almost usual routine when I am playing Oblivion. I have seen some bizzare problems because of mod using sometimes, but nothing like that. Anyway, I launched the game once more.
Still, there was no sound, and NPCs didn’t share their usual rumors. My character was walking, but suddenly, I stopped her.
Everyone was staring at me(or my ‘female toon’). They did not do anything, just stood there, staring. And their eyes…. were missing. Where the eyeballs should be were black, empty void. I was surprised, but I know it’s one of known mod problem. I have seen ‘Help! Eyes are missing!’ topics once in a while, and sometimes answered to them.
It was definitly no good. I checked all mods I installed again. It’s a common problem when eye meshes or textures are missing, and people often have that problem when they try to use cosmetic mod called ‘Beautiful People’ and Robert’s Male Body-BP compatibility plugin(since current version of BP literally replaces default eye meshes and textures, while RM-BP plugin keeps its older eye mesh paths derived from well-known eye addon ‘Elaborate Eyes’). But I was very cautious about that, and I built my own cosmetic mod that is compatible with said body replacer, there was no reason of having such problem. I checked again and again, but could not find the cause. At that point, I wanted to delete the glitched save, and start again. But I also wanted to know what will happen next time. So I ran the game again….
The eyeless NPCs were still staring at me. I wished to run away, so went out of the town, headed for Niben Bay. Without warning, voices were heard from somewhere. I felt relieved; The game started to act normally! However when the voice was coming closer… I realized it’s not.
”STOP RIGHT THERE YOU CRIMINAL SCUM!” Bunch of guards were running to me. The Imperial City Watchmen and city guards from several towns(cities?) were chasing me! I opened the menu and saw the status. No bounty. And they were treating me as if I did something bad! This game was clearly glitched!
I ran, until I nearly reached Bravil. The guards chasing me, now stood still without apparent reason, started to turn and went back to their cities. But the strangeness never stopped. One of guards suddenly collapsed, then dropped dead (immedietly).
’What the….’ I nearly screamed as watching that. A thumping sound, starting like some hearbeat was heard. The dead guy’s body twitched, while stretching little by little. It was well-known glitch, though I never, or seldom saw it in my game unless I close the door when the corpse is on the doorframe.
The dead body of guard was thrashing rather twitching now, and the thumping sound got louder and louder. I couldn’t stand it.
“That’s enough!” I almost yelled at the monitor. Fortunately, I was alone at that time. I never wanted to show this to my family or anyone.
The thumping sound stopped after while, but it got worse. The sky became pitch black, leaving the shining sun and cloud textures. I had seen it before, but this was not the case. There was no reason to having such glitches at once. I would turn off the game and start anew, but I hesistated. ‘Now what will happen?’ I thought.
”MURDER!” “Stop! Thief!” Now what? The guards just stood there, or walked to the cities, however this time, dozens of citizens were dashed on me, yelling and screaming. I ran again, and the eyeless mobs were chasing me everywhere! Trying to flee from them desperately, I ran into a cave before they got me. But it was a mistake. Big mistake.
‘Oh….. $h….’ Everything was completely black inside. It happened before when one of my saves was corrupted beyond repair. The NPCs did not chase me through the door, but it doesn’t make things better. I walked forward, trying to find the door to next zone. Several minutes after, I managed to find the door. However when I proceeded to next zone, I fell to the endless void, then the game crashed(It also happened to me before, when there’re too many plugins and BSA files under \data). The computer froze as well, I had to reboot it.
After rebooting, I ran the game and loaded the save file. It was corrupted. I deleted it, and started new game with same mods. That time, it worked well. No weird glitch without reason, and I could wander anywhere with no problem. The music and ambient sound were back, too.

Terrible.
